Horrible holiday lunch today the Upper East Side. Possibly I was crabby at being made to schlepp to the other side of Central Park; more likely it was the mediocre food in a very tight space. What was bugging everyone else is anyone’s guess.
Fortunately, it turns out that 74th Street and 3rd Avenue is something like the epicenter of French baking in New York City. Looking forward to Payard’s craquelin (brioche dough with marmelade and a crunchy sweet topping studded with whole almonds) after dinner; the baguette from Maison Kayser was as hyped–and with no wait, unlike the Upper West Side location. Everyone emerged happy, each in their own way. Maybe there is a reason to go over there after all…
